Deric has won his first CCMA Award! Deric, (along with co-writers Mitch Merrett and Aaron Pritchett), has been nominated for SOCAN Songwriter Of The Year for "Hold My Beer" (recorded by Aaron Pritchett), at the 2007 Canadian Country Music Awards. The CCMA's will be broadcast September 10th, 2007. This is Deric's 6th career CCMA nomination. On June 1st, at a special ceremony in Merritt, British Columbia, Deric was on-hand as his star was officially unveiled on "The Merritt Walk Of Stars". Billed as 'The 'Country Music Capitol Of Canada', the town's "Merritt Walk Of Stars" is an impressive display of individual markers of bronze, granite, and wood, that are autographed by, and dedicated to country artists from across North America. Deric is honoured to have his star alongside artists he's long admired, including Johnny Cash and June Carter, Merle Haggard, and Brooks and Dunn. Stick another feather in Deric Ruttan's songwriter cap! On January 22, 2007, Capitol Nashville's Eric Church released "Guys Like Me" as his next single to American radio. Deric and Eric wrote the song together, and it appears on Eric's debut CD, Sinners Like Me. "Guys Like Me" is "Deric-the-songwriter"'s fourth charting American single, and it will be his eighth charting Canadian single. This January Deric flew to Vancouver to ride the bus and write songs with his friend Eric Church, opening act for Doc Walker and Dierks Bentley on Dierks' 'Locked & Loaded' cross-Canada tour. When Dierks learned his friend was backstage, he called Deric onstage to help him sing, "That Don't Make It Easy Loving Me", (a new song the two wrote for Dierks' Long Trip Alone album). Fans at the London, Hamilton, and Ottawa, Ontario shows were delighted when, after hearing the two sing "That Don't Make It Easy Loving Me", Dierks' and his band kicked into Deric's debut hit, "When You Come Around", with Dierks joining Deric on lead vocals. On November 22, 2006, Deric attended the 17th Annual SOCAN Awards in Toronto, where he was presented with a Country Music Award for his song, "Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do", (co-written with Brett Beavers and Dierks Bentley, and recorded by Dierks). Each year, SOCAN (The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada), honours members from all genres of music whose songs have achieved national and international success. Also accepting awards were fellow-Canadian songwriters Jann Arden, Finger Eleven, Sum 41, Nickelback, George Canyon, Gordie Sampson, and Five Man Electrical Band's Les Emmerson (to name a few)! This is Deric's seventh SOCAN Award. On October 23, 2006, at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Deric and co-writer Dierks Bentley were presented with ASCAP Awards for their song, "Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do", (co-written with BMI's Brett Beavers and recorded by Dierks). Each year, ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers), honours the songwriters and publishers of the top played songs in the US. This is Deric's third ASCAP Award. Summer 2006 was a busy one for Deric, who headlined concerts in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. In July he performed at "Homecoming with Deric Ruttan ", in Bracebridge, Ontario. Performing in the sold-out gymnasium of his former high school, the two-and-a-half-hour set was a high-energy, emotionally-charged evening that marked the first time Deric had performed in his hometown in over a decade. "The Canadian Countdown" drafts Deric as guest-host. On June 24th and 25th, Deric filled in as on-air personality for "The Canadian Countdown", Paul Brandt's weekly wrapup of Canada's Top 10 Country Hits, broadcast nationwide! The 6th single from Deric Ruttan has been released!! Right on the heels of "Shine", Deric's new single "Invisible" is now at stations across Canada. "Invisible" brings a fresh, insightful look into the sometimes unrealistic expectations found after a breakup happens. It's one more example of the depth of Deric's debut release. Pouring out the songs at "Music in the Clinic"-- Deric recently joined Sony artist (and original Nashville Star winner) Buddy Jewell for a special afternoon at Vanderbilt Hospital's Cancer Clinic. As patients were receiving their chemotherapy treatments, Deric and Buddy walked--guitars in hand--from room to room, visiting with them and taking turns singing songs. On November 21st, 2005, Deric was at the SOCAN Awards in Toronto where he was presented with an award recognizing him for the international success of "Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do" (co-written with Brett Beavers and Dierks Bentley, and recorded by Dierks). (The SOCAN Awards recognize Canadian publishers and songwriters of the year's biggest songs in all genres of music). Also in attendance and receiving awards in the country category were Jason McCoy, Aaron Lines, Brad Mates from Emerson Drive, and Joel Feeney (writer of the LeAnn Rimes' hit, "Nothin' 'Bout Love Makes Sense"). Gary Allan has been officially added to the growing list of artists who have recorded Deric Ruttan songs! Gary's new CD, Tough All Over, (in stores October 11, 2005), includes "Promise Broken", (a song Deric co-wrote with Margaret Findley). Deric's recording of "Promise Broken" appears on his debut, self-titled CD.Deric recently returned from the Canadian Country Music Awards in Alberta where he was nominated for Male Artist of The Year alongside Paul Brandt, Aaron Pritchett, Jason McCoy, and (this year's winner), George Canyon. During the live telecast, Deric introduced his friend Dierks Bentley's performance on the show, and Dierks and Deric co-presented the award for Female Artist Of The Year. Deric's whirlwind trip to Calgary was well-spent, as in addition to his award show duties, he performed at Fanfest, gave radio and television interviews, performed alongside fellow Nashville songwriters Brett James, Bonnie Baker, and James Dean Hicks at the Great Guitar Pull, and rode a mechanical bull with Amanda Wilkinson (don't ask). Deric recently returned from Jamaica where he had been invited by CMT Canada to participate in "Spring Fling". Joining Deric in Jamaica were Dierks Bentley, Doc Walker, the CMT Canada folks, the gang from Country 105 in Calgary, CISN in Edmonton, the New Country 95.3 in Toronto, and of course, all the great contest winners from across Canada. Besides filming Chevy Top 20 with Casey Clarke, filming CMT Central with Stu and Colleen, guesting on the morning radio shows with the Odd Squad, Bruce Bowie, and Stu and Colleen, and having a private dinner with the fans, Deric also participated in an unplugged, guitar pull-style concert on the beach with Dierks and Doc Walker. The 3 artists joined in on each other's songs, and brought the evening to a high-energy finish when Deric and Doc Walker joined Dierks in a full-throttle version of "What Was I Thinkin'". For those of you who have been wondering what Deric has been up to lately -- here it is. He's been in focused, determined songwriter mode. The consummate creator, Deric is performing at only a small number of concerts in the coming months (check out our "Appearing" page for specific dates and locations), so that he can devote most of the summer and fall to something very important to him -- writing truly great songs for the next album! The relatively light summer touring schedule will afford Deric the time to be where he needs to be -- holed up in Nashville, working on the songs that will make his sophomore CD a great one! Congratulations are in order for Dierks Bentley, Deric and Brett Beavers, the songwriters behind Dierks' hit, "Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do". The song, (the lead-off single from Dierks' sophomore CD, Modern Day Drifter), reached #1 status in Canada and stayed there for an impressive 4 weeks! In the US, the song reached #2 and #3 on the R & R and Billboard charts, respectively. (Deric, Brett and Dierks were also the songwriters behind Dierks' debut # 1 hit, "What Was I Thinkin'"). "Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do" is the fourth Ruttan/Beavers/Bentley composition that Dierks has recorded to date. (The other three are "What Was I Thinkin'" and "Distant Shore" from Dierks Bentley, and "I'm Gonna Get There Someday", from Modern Day Drifter). After each of his performances, Deric took time to visit personally with his fans, meeting thousands of people over the course of the 6-and-a-half week tour. He also visited with radio stations, and appeared on the Vicki Gabero Show, where he performed an acoustic version of, "I Saved Everything". While in Toronto recently (on a break from the tour with Paul Brandt), Deric taped a special Christmas episode of 'CMT Central'. The episode features an interview with Deric, as well as an acoustic performance of "Love Did", a song from Deric's self-titled debut CD. Out of this acoustic performance, CMT created an "unplugged" performance video for the song, and have been airing it on the network. On November 28, 2004, Deric attended the O.C.P.F.A. (the Ontario Country Performer and Fan Association) Awards at the Little Big Horn in Cambridge, Ontario. The evening's 'surprise guest', he performed acoustic versions of, "I Saved Everything", and "What Was I Thinkin'", and was honored to receive an 'International Achievement' award from the O.C.P.F.A. On November 15, 2004, Deric was in Toronto for the 2004 SOCAN Awards (an award show honoring Canadian songwriters and publishers of the year's top songs). After participating in a press conference which included fellow Canadian artists Lawrence Gowan, Aaron Lines, Raine Maida, (Our Lady Peace), and Chantal Kreviazuk, he received two awards, one for the chart success in Canada of "What Was I Thinkin'", (co-written with Brett Beavers and Dierks Bentley and recorded by Dierks Bentley), and one for 'International Achievement' for "What Was I Thinkin'". On November 8, 2004, Deric attended the ASCAP Awards (an award show honoring songwriters and publishers of the year's top songs) in Nashville where he and co-writer Dierks Bentley performed an acoustic version of, "What Was I Thinkin'", for the capacity crowd. Deric and Dierks also received an ASCAP award for the song, as it was one of the association's Top 5 Played Songs at Country Radio for 2003. On November 7, 2004, the N.S.A.I. (the Nashville Songwriter's Association International), honored Deric (as well as co-writer's Brett Beavers and Dierks Bentley), with an award for "What Was I Thinkin'". The song was voted "One Of The Ten 'Songs I Wish I'd Written'" by the membership of the N.S.A.I. On September 30, 2004, Deric participated in a 'guitar pull' at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, in which he shared the stage with fellow Canadian singer/songwriters George Canyon, Gordie Sampson, Aaron Lines, and Dan Hill. The event was put together and co-sponsored by SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada), ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers), and SAC (the Songwriter's Association of Canada). At the 2004 Canadian Country Music Awards, (CCMA's), Deric was honored to be nominated for 3 awards - Male Vocalist, Rising Star, and Best Album. On March 6, 2004, Deric performed at the Canadian Radio Music Awards in Toronto, Ontario, where he walked away with a CRMA for Best New Group or Solo Artist in the Country category! The award is voted on by on-air personalities, Program Directors and Music Directors from radio stations across the country. During a recent performance at The Little Big Horn in Cambridge, Ontario, Deric was surprised onstage by representatives of SOCAN, (The Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada), who presented him with a SOCAN # 1 Award for "What Was I Thinkin'", a song he co-wrote with Brett Beavers and Dierks Bentley, that was recorded by Dierks Bentley. The song attained # 1 status in the US on Billboard's Hot Country Singles Chart on September 29, 2003. In March, 2003, Deric was featured in a CMT Canada special called, "My Nashville", in which he gave CMT Central host Elissa Lansdell a tour of his farm just outside Nashville, TN. It's here! In Canada, all of Deric's singles-to-date have been met with rave reviews. His debut single, "When You Come Around", shot into the Canadian Country Music Chart's Top Ten a mere 7 weeks after it's release, and stayed in the Top Ten a total of 12 weeks! Deric's follow-up single, "Unbeatable", also did extremely well at radio, and the accompanying video shot to # 4. "I Saved Everything" was Deric's 3rd single from his self-titled debut CD. A poignant ballad, "I Saved Everything" was a Top 10 hit at radio, generated a huge reaction from radio listeners and concert goers, and furthered Deric's reputation as masterful country storyteller. The music video for "When You Come Around" has been a hit for video channels across North America. Recently, Deric was honored when it rose to become a # 1 video for CMT Canada!! Thanks, CMT! In the US, CMT debuted Deric's video as a "Hot Shot Debut". Deric shared the "Hot Shot Debut" spotlight with Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, John Mellencamp, and The Eagles. The video continues to be in rotation on CMT, GAC, and VH1 Country. In the summer of 2003 Deric experienced the thrill of any country music performer's lifetime when he was invited to perform on the world-famous Grand Ol' Opry! On July 18th and 19th, 2003, Deric made his Opry debut, performing on the same stage as country music legends Hank Williams, Sr., Patsy Cline, Garth Brooks and countless others. Three weeks later he was asked back for a repeat performance.
